Addario chose to photograph each subject in natural light, the effect gentle and decidedly honest, with mastectomy scars purposefully featured. “I believe as a photographer that the more we see something, the more we normalize something like mastectomy scars, the more the stigma is removed,” says Addario. “Several of the women we featured had a hard time looking at their own bodies after surgery, but over time, they grew to feel comfortable, and even feel empowered by their scars, because they were a part of their journey through breast cancer.” One of the women, Mel, refers to her scars as her war wounds.
